Avoiding utility scams

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- This week is National Utilities United Against Scams. in the last four years, more than 3,000 Ameren Illinois customers have reported being contacted by a scammer.

Scams have cost those customers nearly $75,000. Ameren Illinois (and most other utilities) will not demand immediate payment on the phone. Don't buy a prepaid credit card to pay off the debt.

If you receive a call, report it to the police and contact the utility directly. For Ameren customers, call 1-800-755-5000.
