Stores gearing up for Black Friday

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- Managers around town say they're preparing for one of the busiest shopping days of the year by stocking their shelves and promoting deals. While some shoppers in the area say they wont go near stores on Black Friday, others say they can't miss out on the promotions.

Josh Stockinger manages and co-owns Joe's Records inside of Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion. He's hoping for a busy Black Friday.

"Well I'm hoping that we have just as busy as a season that we had last year," Stockinger said.

While managers embrace the crowds, some shoppers have a different take and used the words "chaotic" and "hectic" to describe Black Friday.

But they also say that won't stop them from taking advantage of the deals, especially with many stores kicking off their sales Thanksgiving day.

"When everything was like 4 a.m. in the morning on Black Friday, people were like rushing for everything but now having Thursday and Friday makes it more spread out when people go so it's nice," said Hunter Abatebarrett, of Marion.

Recently the last store in the mall's food court shut down, but Stockinger remains optimistic his Record Store Black Friday deal will be hard to resist.

"We just try to make it easier on shoppers, that's one of the advantages of going to a small business," Stockinger said, adding they're opening their doors at 6 a.m. on Black Friday.

The average person will spend an average of about $970 dollars on holiday shopping this year, according to the National Retail Federation. That's a three percent increase from last year. Experts say more people are working this year and making higher salaries, which will prompt an increase in holiday spending.

If you're planning to shop on Black Friday, experts say it's a good idea to have a list and do some research beforehand.
