Posted: Updated:

UNION CO. --  A herpetologist from the Illinois Natural History Survey made a rare discovery in the Union County's Clear Creek: an alligator snapping turtle.

The species is threatened in the U.S., and this is the first one spotted in Illinois in 30 years.

The discovery happened back in 2014 but just came to light as researchers published their findings.

They estimate the turtle to be 18-year-old. The species can live up to 100 years.
