Du Quoin churches hold vigil for Texas shooting victims

Posted: Updated:

DU QUOIN -- A Texas congregation is still reeling from the effects of a shooting that killed 26 of its members, and local churches in Du Quoin are honoring the victims.

The Du Quoin Ministerial alliance brought their community together to try to bring comfort to those affected.

The clergy of Du Quoin churches said they knew they had to act, so they organized a candlelit vigil for those killed on Nov. 5.

"Many years ago, this didn't happen in small town America, but we realize now that it has come to small town America," said Pastor Lon McPherson of Liberty Church.

Kent Eaton is the pastor of the Second Baptist Church that hosted the vigil. He said it doesn't matter if the people are next door or hundreds of miles away: they are all family.

"The love of Christ is the foundation of what draws us together as believers in the first place," Kent said, "so as we stand on that firm foundation, the love and the blood of Jesus Christ is what unites us."

He said any comfort they can offer will hopefully make a difference in the lives of those who lost loved ones just a week ago.

"The weeks and the months to come... it's going to be a struggle," he said. "It's going to be difficult."
