SIU falls to Youngstown on senior day

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE - The football Salukis closed out their home slate on Saturday against Youngstown State.

Before the game, Southern honored its 14 seniors who were playing their final game at Saluki Stadium.

The game was scoreless until the second quarter when Matt DeSomer found his way to the end zone to give SIU the lead.

But the Penguins scored the next 14 points to take the lead into halftime.

Each team scored a touchdown in the third, but the Salukis kicked a field goal to pull within four points.

Southern added another field goal in the fourth and still had nine minutes to play.

The Salukis had their chances to take the lead, but late in the fourth, DeSomer was hit as he threw the ball.  Justus Reed picked up the loose ball and took it to the house to seal the deal for the Penguins.

Youngstown State wins it 28-20.

DeSomer led the team in passing, rushing and receiving.

Southern closes out the season November 18th on the road against Western Illinois.
