Christmas comes early in Murphysboro

MURPHYSBORO -- It could be called early Christmas.

Dozens of General Cable employees and others from southern Illinois pulled into the parking lot of the Murphysboro Youth Home Saturday to bring the spirit of giving a little early this year.

When employees at Du Quoin's General Cable got the idea to make a difference this season, they knew they could do something big.

"The call for help went out and everyone just showed up. A lot from General Cable but all around the community," Chad Shiner said. Shiner is a General Cable employee who was one of employees with the idea to help.

While a car show was put on for the kids, they also brought hundreds of dollars in gift cards.

Julie O'Connor works for the the youth home and said the act of kindness couldn't have come at a better time.

"They're just kids that need a safe place and lots of love, a home, and structure. We need them just as much as they need us too," O'Conner said.

She can only describe the actions of today with one word: blessed.

"My favorite word truly is blessed. These kids bless me every day and we just want them to continue to grow up," she said.

They both say there is a special sense of community bringing southern Illinois together.

"Everybody just came in in whatever vehicle they had and we headed this way. So it was very cool," Shiner said.

O'Connor calls the youth home one big family and the gift cards will help make everyone's Christmas that much better.

"I'll take Christmas in November anytime... anytime," she said.

The Murphysboro Youth Home is part of Spero Family Services.
