New businesses coming to Mt. Vernon

Posted: Updated:

MT. VERNON -- You can soon find new businesses in Mt. Vernon.

The city council approved two development agreements Monday: one with a Culver's restaurant and the other with a Mach One gas station.

The new businesses will go up at the intersection of S. 42nd Street and Veterans Memorial Drive.

Mt. Vernon Mayor John Lewis said with a Menard's planned for the other side of the highway, business is booming.

"So now we've got two different properties being developed on both sides of the new interchange so I look for a lot of expansion out there now," Lewis said. "A lot more developers are going to want to come build because those two companies are going to bring a lot of traffic."

The city plans to abate property taxes for the development for two years as well as rebate some sales tax revenue.

The developer has agreed to pay for a new right-turn lane at the intersection.
