Local Chamber of Commerce directors team up urging you to shop local

Posted: Updated:

WILLIAMSON CO. -- As the holiday season approaches, southern Illinois Chamber of Commerce directors want you to think and spend local.

The Marion Chamber of Commerce is pairing up with other chambers throughout Williamson County promoting their Shop Southern Illinois Campaign.

They're encouraging people to spend their money locally because it stays local.

"Consider what those local people are bringing to the table when it comes to employing your neighbor," Fox Comics owner Dan Fox said. "We have probably six or eight employees that work for us and it changes lives."

Fox's comic book store has been in business for more than three years, but without customers.

"A very dreary town," Fox said.

That's something Marion Chamber of Commerce Director Dalus Ben Avi is trying to prevent, with the 2017 Shop Southern Illinois Campaign.

"Shopping locally shouldn't be a holiday thing: it should be a mindset," Avi said.

Avi is instilling that mindset through a social media campaign asking people who shop locally to take a picture and post it on Facebook with, the hash tag #IBUYSI,  giving people a chance to win prizes every week through the end of December.

"We're really passionate about the educational aspect of it, so giving away prizes just gets people to participate," Avi said.

That's great news for Dan back at Fox comics.

The grand prize drawing will be December 29.

The prize is a one year supply of Pepsi.
