Anna and Dongola PD's receive grants for bulletproof vests

Posted: Updated:

UNION CO. -- The federal government gave two Southern Illinois police departments money for bulletproof vests.

Anna received a majority of the money: $4,000 to pay for 10 vests.

The 50/50 grant will require Anna city leaders to chip in another $4,000 to cover the cost.

Anna Police Chief Michael Hunter said his department won the grant once before, and this time it comes with new guidelines.

"One [is] mandatory wear policy, the other one is that the vest is actually measured and fitted for each officer," he said.

Dongola received grant money as well, but only to cover one vest.

Police departments only get to apply for the grant once every five years.
