Movies back at the Varsity

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- Bright flashing marquees, elegantly decorated lobbies and plush folding seats: That's the memory of dozens of local theaters across southern Illinois.

"You've got the Liberty in Murphysboro. You've got the Grand in Du Quoin," Nathan Colombo said.

Colombo is a board member of the Varsity Center for the Arts and plans on bringing movies back to the historic Carbondale movie theater the Varsity.

"Because of memories but also because of the future and the opportunities we have," he said.

Bringing back those memories has involved a lot of time and effort in fundraising.

So far, the theater has been able to raise over $1,000 of its goal of bringing just one of southern Illinois' historic theaters back to life.

Movie theaters just like the Varsity lined the downtowns of southern Illinois communities, and Colombo hopes by bringing the Varsity back to life, it will start a trend among others.

"If we're able to be successful here and share that with other theaters around southern Illinois, then there's something viable in something like a Southern Illinois Theater Trail," Colombo said.

He said bringing back the old theaters also brings back a lot to a community.

"And it just made sense that this having been an old theater should also have movies playing it to allow folks to relive their experiences," he said.

Through careful planning and the passion for their local community like Colombo and the others at the Varsity, movies will be back on the silver screen.
