Du Quoin city leaders address flooding problems

Posted: Updated:

DU QUOIN -- Du Quoin city leaders believe they've fixed a flooding problem plaguing the Southtown Shopping Center.

This parking lot of the Southtown shopping center has given the city of Du Quoin headaches for years when it comes to flooding.

The problem has been an old drainage culvert that was long past its lifespan.

"It needed to be replaced," said City Engineer Doug Bishop.

So Bishop got to work replacing the old culvert with a new one.

Bishop says the work that has already been done near the Southtown Shopping Center will go a long way in preventing the whole parking lot, from turning into one big puddle like years past.

"We've had some significant rain this year and some significant flooding in this parking lot," said Bishop.

A popular parking lot Bishop says is now backed up against floods.

"We shouldn't have any significant problems from here on out," explained Bishop.

And on a rainy day that's great news for everyone in town.

Grocery store Save-A-Lot is scheduled to move into vacant property in the Southtown shopping center by mid November.
