Southern Illinois hospital wins national award

JEFFERSON COUNTY -- A Jefferson County hospital is being honored for helping its patients get in and out, in no time.

Employees at Crossroads Hospital in Mt. Vernon say, while it's an award they weren't expecting, they believe it's well deserved.

The hospital has been honored as one of the 2017 Women's Choice Awards best emergency rooms in the country.

Emergency room director Crysta Minnick believes the reason her team won the award is simple:

"It's not just a physician making all the decisions, or nurses. We're all able to work together to provide what we feel is the best care," explained Minnick.

Minnick and her E.R. team aren't the only ones who feel that way.

"I received an email and my first instinct was, 'wow,' but the second thing was, 'wait, we do this every day," said Crossroads CEO Matthew Finney.

The email sent to Finney came from the Women's Choice Awards, a national organization recognizing Crossroads' quick response to emergencies.

"Our average E.R. wait time is 17 minutes and our average length of stay is 155 minutes, and we monitor that daily," explained Finney.

Thanks to a computer system providing hospital staff live updates on patients 24 hours a day.

"It tells me how long we've had patients waiting, and how many patients we have in the E.R," added Finney.

The emergency room that employees at Crossroads can now proudly call one of the best in the U.S.

"It just means that the work we do gets noticed. We work really hard to provide the best care possible and treat everybody like it's our own family member," added Minnick.

Something the Women's Choice Award says Minnick and everyone at the crossroads E.R. is doing a great job of.
