Parking locations for Veteran's Honor Flight return

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- Thousands of people are expected be at the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois Tuesday night welcoming veterans home from their trip to Washington D.C., and that could mean traffic.

"We've heard estimates of from 5 to 7,000 people," said Tracey Glenn with the Veterans Honor Flight and Peoples National Bank, "so this time, with the flight being an hour and half earlier, we could have upwards of 10,000."

That means hundreds of vehicles, and although the airport is expanding, more parking may be needed.

Glenn said multiple businesses and groups have offered to help.

"We needed additional parking and thanks to our friends at Rides Mass Transit, they stepped up and said, 'We want to help,'" Glenn said.

They'll offer to run 10 rides every 15 minutes from overflow lots starting at 5:00 p.m.

The 5 off-site parking locations are John A. Logan College, Community Of Faith Church, Sam's Club, Cornerstone Church and Rent One Ball Park.

Nancy Brown with Honor Flight said she hopes the community steps up and lets our veterans know how much they're appreciated.

"I would like to see every one of one of those five parking lots packed full," Brown said.

Glenn said a good time is planned for all that show up.

"We'll have food trucks and music here at the airport," Glenn said, "so we want everyone to come out early, enjoy the festivities and welcome our veterans home."

Parking locations are indicated as "stars" on the map below.
