Group aims to help children overcome educational obstacles

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- The Voices for Illinois Children organization gave its take on this year's 2017 Illinois Kids Count report.

The report shows low income and minority children often don't do well academically.

The group Voices for Illinois Children aims to reduce those educational shortcomings.

"This report uses the best available data to measure educational, social, emotional, economic, and physical well-being of children, and is intended to provide policymakers, community leaders, and education leaders with the material that they need to make the changes happen," said Bonnie Wheeler, vice chair of Voices for Illinois Children.

The group says changes will only come with investments in quality early childhood education for low and middle income families, stopping inequities in curriculum and discipline, and  support for mental health and regular health services.
