SIUC students celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- September 15 to October 15 marks Hispanic Heritage Month and several SIUC students got together for the occasion Thursday night.

Folks in Carbondale celebrated at the Brazilian restaurant Sabor de Mel. That's where they had lots of music, dancing and food. Students in SIU's MEDPREP program organized the event.

"I'm from New York City and my parents are from the Dominican Republic, so it reminds me of family," said Madeline De La Cruz, an SIUC MEDPREP student. "Being so far away from them and having this community that I can interact with and share my culture, feels great, and having others enjoy it as well."

The month celebrates the cultures, history and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, according to the Library of Congress.
