Interstate 57 north bound closed due to fatal traffic crash.

UPDATE: TUESDAY, OCT. 10, 2017 -- 5:40 P.M.

WSIL -- Illinois State Police say the victim in Tuesday's crash was Wayne Maxwell, 57, of O'Fallon, IL. He was the driver of a van stopped behind a semi a mile away from construction on the northbound lanes of Interstate 57 in Williamson County when another semi slammed into them.

The driver of the moving semi, Willie Lee Shelby, 62, of Madison, MS suffered minor injuries. Illinois State Police cited him with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident but Trooper Joey Watson said more charges could be filed, pending an investigation.

The driver of the leading semi and his passenger were not hurt.

UPDATE: TUESDAY, OCT. 10, 2017 -- 5:15 P.M.

WSIL -- Northbound lanes have re-opened to traffic. Traffic was stopped for nearly 4 hours, while crews worked to clear the wreckage. The Illinois State Police say there was one confirmed fatality and one other injury. Stay with News 3 for updates.

WSIL -- The Illinois State Police are currently on scene of a multi vehicle crash on Interstate 57 Northbound at Mile Post 47. State Police report there are injuries and one confirmed fatality at this time. All north bound traffic is being diverted at Exit 45, and police are asking drivers to seek alternate routes. Stay with News 3 for updates.
