Residents puzzled by overnight shooting in Carbondale

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- With the crime scene tape taken down, residents are still wondering about the shooting that left one person dead in a neighborhood in the 700 block of East College Street in Carbondale.

Residents in the usually quiet neighborhood in Carbondale said they were woken up in the early morning hours of Saturday by police saying there was a shooting.

"This area is pretty quiet," resident Isaac Fletcher said. "People in this area are grad school students, so you don't really hear anything. There's not a lot of noise."

Fletcher said he heard the noise but didn't assume it was gunfire and went back to sleep.

"Probably wasn't a shot," he said he thought. "Probably just someone throwing a firework or something. So I didn't pay any mind until I got woken up by police officers."

Neighbors said they came out of their homes in the middle of the night to find crime scene tape stretched across cars and mobile homes.

Fletcher said he has no idea what would have caused the shooting.

"I didn't hear any arguments, so that's why I didn't think anything of it," he said. "I didn't hear anybody talk or hear any cars screech off."

Police aren't releasing the victim's identity until next of kin is notified.

Isaac and others in the neighborhood said while the shooting was tragic, they're fortunate no one else was caught in the crossfire.
