SIUC holds annual blood drive

CARBONDALE -- SIUC marks homecoming week with its 8th annual Homecoming Blood drive.

According to the American Red Cross, someone needs blood in the United States every two seconds. Organizers of the SIUC blood drive said about 200 people came in to donate to help meet those needs.

They set a goal of 220 pints of blood and late Thursday, they'd come within a few dozen pints from reaching the goal.

Meantime, leaders in Las Vegas said they currently have enough blood for victims of the mass shooting, but organizers still encourage people to donate to help free-up the overall supply.

"It really does highlight the need for the blood that's already on the hospital shelves prior to this event happening," said Jennifer Freeze, American Red Cross Account Manager. "Unfortunately, you just never know when something like that is going to happen, we pray that nothing does."

If you missed Thursday, blood drives will take place Friday at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and also at the Southern Illinois Healthcare system's office at University Mall from 10 a.m to 3 p.m.
