Deputy's arrest shocks neighbors

FRANKLIN CO. -- Former Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Hampton found himself behind bars Thursday morning. It comes after a two-year-long sexual assault investigation.

It's a case that leaves many neighbors concerned, and others shocked and in disbelief to hear Hampton would be accused of such a crime.

"You hear a lot about this stuff in bigger cities, but you don't expect to hear about it in smaller areas," said Kathy Fromherz, a Franklin County neighbor. "It makes me feel scared because it’s people that we should trust, so it’s scary.”

A statement from Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones shows 37-year-old Hampton faces charges of criminal sexual assault and custodial sexual misconduct.

It all started in January of 2016 and involved a woman under arrest, according to court documents obtained by News 3. Authorities placed Hampton on administrative leave the day of the incident. He later resigned.

A special prosecutor has taken charge of the case.

"At least they were on top of it enough to investigate it, so hopefully if it's going on anywhere else, they'll have a handle on it as well," Fromherz said.

Fromherz said despite the shocking investigation, she won't completely lose trust in law enforcement.

"I don't feel that it reflects on other people," Fromherz said. "We can't punish other people for what somebody else did."

If convicted, Hampton could get between five years and life in prison.
