SACK HUNGER: Harrisburg 4 C's Food Pantry

Posted: Updated:

HARRISBURG -- We have only three weeks left in our Sack Hunger Food Drive and we need your help collecting food for families in Jackson and Saline Counties. This week we are supporting pantries in Murphysboro and Harrisburg.

Melvin and Judy Yates got married 50 years ago, and still remain strong to this day. Health problems in recent years have caused the Carrier Mills couple to rely on other resources to keep food on the dinner table.

"I think this is great. I think the churches putting all this together is wonderful," said Melvin.

Right now, Judy battles cancer and doctor bills have made spending tighter.

"We've been driving back and forth to Carterville and Carbondale and making  a lots of trips so we've been a little short on money," said Judy.

4 C's Food Pantry in Harrisburg helps the Yates and many others, with food once a month.

"Hopefully, in that bag, we will have enough food for about three meals and that helps to stretch that food stamp dollar and to make it through to the end of the month," said Interim Director Mona Crim.

4 C's stands for Christian Community Compassion Center and Crim said volunteers work hard to live up to that name.

"Whenever somebody's hungry, somebody's got to feed them," said Crim.

Crim said, in August, they served 578 families. She believes a lack of job opportunities have hurt many of the families the pantry serves. Local churches support the pantry, along with two food banks, but they run out of cereals, canned vegetables and fruits quickly.

Each meal that we sit down to, we need to remember those that are in need. Those that don't have a meal for whatever the reason and make sure that we are helping to reach that need for them," said Crim.

The Yates said they appreciate all 4 C's does to help them stay healthy.

"I'm grateful, grateful for these people here and the churches and everyone else that's involved in this project," added Melvin.

You can find the 4 C's pantry open, Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. The game is Friday night with kickoff at 7 p.m.
