New grant to help improve access for patients in Cairo

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- The Delta Regional Authority has awarded Community Health and Emergency Services (CHESI) in Cairo with a $118,489 grant to improve patient access to medical records and telemedicine.

Patients will be able to use new tablets mounted in every exam room to view their medical records, retrieve prescriptions and lab results, watch helpful video, even download healthy recipes.

Kanci Houston, the electronic health record coordinator, said the tablets will empower patients.

"It will provide patients with a better opportunity to know what is going on with her health," said Houston.

Fred Bernstein, the CEO of CHESI, says the grant will also help improve IT infrastructure, enabling patients to speak to medical experts in different parts of the country, even the world.

"Now we're a step closer to being able to do a lot more than we've been able to do," said Bernstein.

Training will be provided to patients once the services are ready, which should be in a couple of months.
