SACK HUNGER: Harrisburg Harvest Deliverance Center

Posted: Updated:

HARRISBURG -- We have only three weeks left in our Sack Hunger Food Drive and we need your help collecting food for families in Jackson and Saline Counties. This week we are supporting pantries in Murphysboro and Harrisburg.

Patricia Earl knows what it's like to go without food, to feed her children.

"I would sell everything that I had in order to get food for my family," said Earl.

Earl fell on hard times after her 14-year-old son was born with a rare genetic developmental disorder.

"He weighed one pound when he was born and he's got a syndrome called Cornelia de Lange. He's on a vent. He's got a trache(ostomy)," said Earl.

Earl has had her own health problems, battling two forms of cancer. She's now in remission but said Harvest Deliverance Center food pantry has kept her family from going hungry.

"If it hadn't been for them, I don't know. I would probably lose my mind because I don't have very much left to sell or very much left to even trade for food."

On average the pantry serves about 570 people a month. Some of them with unimaginable situations.

"We have people come in that they are not getting enough to take their medication. Some of them even eating dog food," added church Pastor Ownly Williams.

The pantry is supported by generous donations from community members and a food bank in Evansville, but Pastor Ownly Williams says it's never enough food to keep the shelves full.

"This past week, we've ran out of the funds that are donated to help our pantry," said Williams.

That's why said any donation to the pantry helps.

Earl's daughter, Adreama, said she admires her mom because she knows the sacrifice she's made to keep her and her siblings fed.

"She's doing a great job of being a mother and what a mother should be and I love her for that," said Adreama.

You can find this pantry open every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The game in Harrisburg is Friday, at 7 p.m.
