Fabick Cat in Marion to close

Posted: Updated:

MARION --  A prominent Marion employer will be closing up shop before the end of the year.

A letter, shared with News 3, shows Fabick Cat will be closing its Marion location on December 1, resulting in a loss of 29 jobs.

The letter was sent out to staff members late last month, and says that the termination will be permanent.

Calls to the Marion location were directed to the corporate headquarters in Fenton, Missouri.

A spokesperson for Fabick Cat said he could not confirm whether or not the facility would be shutting down.

Still, Marion Mayor Bob Butler says he was disappointed to hear the facility would be closing.

"Of course we always hate to see any job disappear," he said.

Fabick CAT sold and rented Caterpillar construction machinery and parts in its Marion Location for more than half a century.

"They have been in Marion for more than 50 years and I believe they've been very successful, but I'm sure that Caterpillar is tired of fighting the state," Butler said.

He thinks the state economy is likely to blame for the sudden move.

"Illinois is not a business friendly environment, and it is sad that they will be closing this facility," he said.

Though the letter highlights December 1 as the closing date, people familiar with the situation tell News 3 that employees were told November 9 will be their last day.

Officials with Fabick say you can click this link to find the nearest Fabick location.
