ZEIGLER -- A federal grand jury has indicted Ryan A. Thorpe, 44, of Zeigler, with wire fraud and embezzlement from a local government.

Zeigler fired Thorpe as treasurer last month.

The indictment shows Thorpe embezzled more than $300,000 between March 4, 2013 and Aug. 3, 2017.

Thorpe wrote city checks to himself and then modified copies of the checks to hide the thefts.

He used the money to buy guns, jewelry, and UTVs.

Thorpe is charged with three counts of wire fraud and two counts of embezzlement.

Each count of wire fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 yeas in prison.

Each count of embezzlement carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
