Man smashes windows with golf club at Mt. Vernon Federal Building

Posted: Updated:

MT. VERNON -- The Federal Building in Mt. Vernon partially shut down Tuesday, after police say a man wielding a golf club smashed 10 windows.

Police have that man behind bars, but don't know what triggered his rampage.

"The entire Federal Building is made out of glass windows, and officers got there and he was striking the windows with a golf club," said police chief Chris Diechman.

Diechman says 23-year-old Demetruis Clark broke 10 windows before running over to the Dairy Queen across the street, where he was arrested after a brief struggle with police.

"They have an outside dining area and he started throwing patio furniture into Broadway Street," said Diechman.

Folks like Julie McCleary showed up not realizing the office was closed, shattering her plans.

"Well, I drove over here from Nashville. I just got married and was trying to get my new social security card, and obviously to get my name changed," McCleary.

A spokesperson from the U.S. General Services Administration explained in an email that not all offices were closed, despite the sign on the door.  The statement said "The Social Security Administration chose to close their office. Other federal agencies remained open."

"If I had known that something was going on, or something had happened, I obviously wouldn't have drove all the way over for nothing," said McCleary.

The spokeswoman did not say when exactly all offices would reopen.

Meantime, Clark has been charged with Felony Criminal Damage to Property over $10,000 and Resisting Arrest.
