Libertarian candidates stop in Mt. Vernon

Posted: Updated:

MT. VERNON -- Two libertarian candidates, who plan to run for Illinois offices in the November 2018 General Election  made an appearance at the Mt. Vernon Fall Fest.

Claire Ball is running for comptroller.

She said Illinoisans have a right to know how state politicians are spending their tax dollars.

"I want to tie back budgets to actually results. Right now we don't see that.We get the budgets at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year, when they get around to it, they get the results out. There's no comparison. You can't really see how the politicians have been with spending our tax dollars," said Ball.

Ball said Illinois needs someone more focused on the job, than the politics surrounding the office.

Steve Dutner was also at the festival. Dutner is running for the office of Secretary of State, as a Libertarian.

Dutner said it his his goal to keep the government out of people's private business and he plans to do that, in part, by privatizing the DMV.

"One of the things I’m running on is to privatize the DMV to make things a little more private for consumers who have to utilize the secretary of state’s office or the DMV," said Dutner.

He said privatization and keeping government out of people's every day lives is the main message of the Libertarian Party.

Note: A previous version of this story inadvertently noted the candidates would be on the March primary ballot.
