Hunting and Fishing Days organizer remembers 30 years of history

Posted: Updated:

CARTERVILLE -- Southern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days starts Saturday at at John A. Logan College, and with thousands of people expected to come to campus for a weekend of fun, one said that for him, this year's event will be bittersweet.

Ron Allen has been helping organize Hunting and Fishing Days since the beginning, but he said this time around is special because it will be his last.

He said he's seen Hunting and Fishing days grow from a small event to one that's expected to attract more than 40,000 people this year.

"Most events don't last this long," he said, thinking of 30 years of history with the event, "and we've continued to get bigger and bigger crowds, and bigger and better."

Allen said one of his favorite parts of Hunting and Fishing days, which features more than 200 vendors, presentations, demonstrations and a kids area, is seeing the smiles on people's faces throughout the event

Now he just hopes to see those smiles one last time.

The event will go from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
