Carbondale African American Museum to celebrate 20 years

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- The African American Museum in Carbondale will hold a fundraiser this weekend in celebration of 20 years of operation.

The museum opened in 1997 by two residents who wanted to celebrate and share African American contributions across the country but especially in Southern Illinois.

The museum is inside the University Mall, and exhibits change every 6 to 8 weeks displaying quilts, books, work by artists, moments in time and historical artifacts.

We just want people to come out, have a good time, lots of food fun, meet new people, dance a lot and just celebrate with us," said Carolin Harvey of the museum.

The celebration will take place at the Carbondale Civic Center at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Cost is  $50 per person, and you're asked to wear cocktail attire.
