Ameren urges safety as harvest season kicks off

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Harvest time is upon us, and Ameren is reaching out to farmers, urging them to stay safe when heading to the fields.

The power company is asking farmers to be cautious near gas and power lines. Experts said tractors and other equipment need to stay at least 10 feet away from lines.

Underground gas lines should be marked by flags. Ameren said farmers who don't know where those lines are buried need to call 811.

"We just want you to be aware of what your surroundings are above you and below you cause we want to see you be able to provide for your family for generations to come," Brain Bretsch of Ameren said.

The company is reaching out to farmers as part of National Farm Safety Week.

Across the country, an average of 63 farmers are electrocuted each year in farm accidents.
