CARBONDALE -- An area car dealership invests nearly a million dollars into a project aimed at helping them go green.
Vogler Ford, in Carbondale, teamed up with Burke Electric, in Murphysboro, to install more than 1,600 solar panels.
It took about six weeks to install the 20,000 square feet of panels on Vogler's seven properties in southern Illinois.
Managers say while they expect to earn back their investment in energy savings, it's more about reducing their carbon footprint.
"As a business owner, you look at things that will help you, not just your cash flow, but also with impact in your community. And we felt like the solar initiative that we took with the LED lights and all the other things we've done to go green is just a good statement to the community about where we are," said Vogler Sales Manager Kern Weshinskey
On a normal day, managers say they will generate enough power to put the energy back on the grid instead of take it off.
