Apple Festival marks 66 years in Murphysboro

MURPHYSBORO -- The 66th annual Apple Festival kicks off Wednesday.

Crews are already setting up for the four-day event downtown.

This year's theme is "Do You Remember When."

Organizer Ken Carr said a group of students at the Murphysboro Grade School came up with the theme and the organizing committee felt it was a perfect time to reflect on the event's history.

"A lot of people think about all these 66 years of apple festival and there's a lot of good memories that a lot of us have," Carr said.

Crews worked in the rain Tuesday setting up the food stands and carnival rides, something Carr hopes won't stick around.

"I hope Irma gets away from here. I don't know where she needs to go, but just not here," Carr said.

The festival kicks off with the Prayer Breakfast at the Davis-McCann Center. The opening ceremony starts at 5:15 p.m. at the grandstand stage.

The Appletime Grand Parade is Saturday at 11 a.m. A more detailed list of events can be found here.
