IDOT construction in Carterville nearing completion

Posted: Updated:

WILLIAMSON COUNTY -- Construction work is close to completion along Route 13 in Carterville. IDOT Engineers are warning drivers to stay alert while changes take place.

IDOT leaders say a new frontage road will be the only way drivers will be able to get in and out of the Crab Orchard Campgrounds using Route 13.

Engineer Doug Helfrich said the new IDOT safety project limits access points from Campground Road, near the boat docks, to Route 13.

"It's confusing because a lot of people aren't used to using the frontage roads," said Joni Barwick, Marketing Representative for Deloufleur Decor and Designs.

Crews began construction last spring on the frontage road that will lead to Greenbriar Road and traffic lights.

IDOT Engineer Doug Helfrich said the speed limit and the amount of traffic combined makes it a dangerous intersection.

"It's much safer when somebody's pulling a boat or a camper to access (Route)13 through a signalized intersection," said Helfrich.

The Wolf Creek project will soon end, as crews resurface the east and westbound lanes on Route 13 in Carterville.

"I think once construction's complete it will be clearer for people to, not only see the businesses but they'll feel safer," said Barwick

Barwick said drivers should get used using the ramp. She said Donna Drive will connect people to businesses on the south side.

"They can also turn at Division Street in Carterville at Motomart and go to the South also to Donna Drive, so it's just a new way of getting in and out of these businesses," added Barwick.

Helfrich says the Wolf Creek project is scheduled to be finished next month. The Campground Road project is set to be finished in November.
