Traveling veteran memorial makes stop in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON -- A traveling memorial, which features over ten thousand names of veterans and first responders who died in combat or in an act of terrorism, made a stop at the Mt. Vernon airport.

The welcoming of the Wall of Remembrance began Sunday afternoon with a special ceremony. The wall's curator, Derek Hendershot, said it often provides a sense of closure for a veteran or their family.

"We have veterans that are, for the first time, talking about the issues they face," he said. "A lot of the times that's what they need to do is talk about it with other veterans. Sometimes, this is the first time a veteran is seeing a name on a wall."

The wall came about during the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

The goal is to bring the traveling wall within 50 miles of every gold star family across the United States.
