John A. Logan College receives $1.5 million private donation

Posted: Updated:

CARTERVILLE -- This week, John A. Logan Community College received a $1.5 million private donation, the largest ever in the history of the college.

The money comes from a Carterville couple who left $1.5 million in their will and will go to the creation of an endowment for students interested in pursuing business.

The couple, James and Rosemary "Dee" Childress, were high school sweethearts that married during World War II, shortly before James Childress departed for the South Pacific in 1943, according to a press release.

Following the war, he returned to high school and later attended SIU, graduating in 1951.

He would later go on to become a successful businessman, owning "numerous corporations and businesses in industries such as steel erection, banking, construction, sales as well as motels and nursing homes" in the region.

Both died at 90, Dee in 2015 and James in 2016.

The check was delivered to JALC Thursday morning by their attorney.
