Veterans on Parade steps off in Marion

Posted: Updated:

MARION-- Thousands lined the street Saturday morning in Marion to honor veterans who served our country and first responders.

An estimated 2,000-3,000 people turned out for the annual Veteran's on Parade that stepped off from Marion Junior High.

The parade was organized by a group of local veterans to honor veterans of war time and peace time.

"As you know, veteran's hadn't always been welcomed. They haven't always had this type of recognition, so it's heartening to see this happen," said Angelo Hightower, a member of the Veteran's Parade Committee and a veteran himself.

Hightower said the parade continues to grow every year as more veterans from across southern Illinois join in.

The parade covers about 1 mile between the Marion Junior high and the Old Town Square.
