Saline Co. board moves forward with auditing clerk's office

SALINE CO. -- The Saline County Board will move forward with auditing the County Clerk's Office. The decision was made in a special meeting held Thursday night.

The board unanimously approved a forensic audit of the clerk's office. This comes after tension developed between the board and Saline County Clerk Kim Buchanan, after members rose red flags about how she's been doing her job.

Jonathan Russell grew up in Saline County, and now serves on the Harrisburg School Board. Concern over county finances brought him to the meeting.

"Just really concerned about what's going on in our county, trying to see some resolution to all the problems," said Russell. "If there was an audit and there's not a problem, everything will be resolved and if there's a problem, then find out what's going on."

Buchanan sat silently throughout the whole meeting, taking notes. She told News 3 she welcomes an audit and describes the drama over at the office as "political witchcraft."

Joe Jackson, Chairman of Budget and Finance Committee, said he'd become frustrated with the way Buchanan handled finances.

"My concern is for the citizens of this county," said Jackson. "I don't understand her reasoning, I don't get it, it just doesn't make sense."

A special committee will oversee the implementation of that audit, which everyone hopes, will help bring answers.

"I want this audit to prove that [the money] is being spent wisely and prudently and if there's wrongdoing, I want the community to know that we as a county board have their backs," Jackson said.

And Russel hopes it will happen soon.

"So much going on," Russel said. "There's been so much going back and forth, just would like to see it resolved."
