Sack Hunger: Least of the Brethren in Pinckneyville

Posted: Updated:

BENTON -- We're just one day away from Friday night football and Sack Hunger. This week, News 3 is in Benton as the Rangers host Pinckneyville.

Pinckneyville resident Julie Karabec fell on hard times after her husband died.

"My husband passed away nine years ago, and since then I've been utilizing the food pantry and stuff and it's helped," said Karabec

She says boxes of food from Least of the Brethren in Pinckneyville each month has helped relieve the burden.

"It just helps me to get by from month to month because my check is so small," she said.

Pantry president George Culley and his wife Betty started the pantry 20-years-ago in a desire to help families in the area.

"It's from the heart, not from the head, not head knowledge but it's God. He wants us to tell people, 'Jesus says feed my people and Jesus' hands feed the hungry.' We want to feed the poor that's where it's at. There's an hunger issue out there," said George.

The Culleys and faithful volunteers serve about 300 families a month, and 90 percent of their food comes from the St. Louis Area Food bank. They also get donations from different organizations.

"I thank everybody that brings the stuff, me and Betty, brings the food. The churches the individuals, the non-profits, the corporations," he said.

The food bank delivers commodities and fresh produce a few times a month. Families can come once a month for commodities, and can pick up fresh produce from their "mobile market."

Karabec says without the pantry, the volunteers and even the donations, she would struggle month to month.

"We got a lot of good people in Pinckneyville and the surrounding areas and they help a lot. They help the pantry a lot," added Karabec.

You'll find The Least of the Brethren pantry open Mondays and Fridays from 9 to noon.

Friday the game kicks off 7 p.m. Don't forget that the first 100 people who bring 10 items or more will get a free Sack Hunger T-shirt
