SIU's enrollment numbers compared to other regional universities

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- Does a serious dip in SIU enrollment signal a trend that may impact other schools?

The recent Illinois budget crisis created real problems for universities across the state. Some students chose to more certainty by choosing schools "outside" Illinois.

SIU's new chancellor, Carlo Montemagno, called this years enrollment numbers "disappointing," but didn't solely blame state leaders.

"I believe that we have not positioned ourselves, our academic programming, our outreach, our communications efforts, and really highlighted the incredible strengths of an SIU Carbondale experience," said Montemagno.

He says it all contributed to the nearly 9 percent decline SIU saw this fall semester. SIU seems to have taken the hardest hit, compared to nearby schools.

SIU Edwardsville reported only a 2.4 percent dip in enrollment.

U of I officials don't have firm numbers but describe enrollment across the university system, as at a record high this year, primarily because of gains at the UI Chicago campus.

The Urbana campus did see what they call a "minuscule" decline.

Illinois State University also reported a "small" decline, with just 286 fewer freshmen than last year.

SIU's  Montemagno said in an email to faculty he and staff will  look at "all of the pieces of the puzzle" and remains "confident SIU can rebuild."

Murray State University reports some challenges in enrollment as well, but claims to have an aggressive recruitment effort underway.

Southeast Missouri State University has not released enrollment numbers.
