SIU enrollment drops, chancellor hopes to turn things around

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- New figures released Tuesday show SIU's fall enrollment dropped again.

It dropped nearly 9 percent from 15,987 students in 2016 to 14,554 students in 2017.

SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno said the state budget impasse is one of the reasons for the decline. The chancellor said he's not concerned about the numbers but knows of the challenges and hopes to fix them.

"I believe that we have not positioned ourselves, our academic programming, our outreach, our communications efforts, and really highlighted the incredible strengths of an SIU Carbondale experience," said Montemagno.

School leaders said they plan to focus on restructuring recruitment and retention efforts to increase the enrollment numbers.
