Du Quoin State Fair crowd "disappointing" for businesses

Posted: Updated:

DU QUOIN -- Cleanup is still going on and attendance numbers aren't yet in, but local businesses say the Du Quoin State Fair didn't bring in the customers they were expecting.

"It was not at all what we thought," said Cadey Hess. "Not at all what we thought it was going to be."

Hess is manager of Backwater Pub and Grub, right next to the fairground in Du Quoin.

She says the business didn't see much of a boost at all during this year's Du Quoin State Fair.

"We were packed every day that we were open last year, we had 45 minute waits at the door for food last year," she said. "This year we didn't have any of that."

She says the pub over-ordered food in anticipation of crowds that never came.

"This week we have to hope business is going to be busy so we can get rid of things that we over ordered," she said.

Hess grew up going to the Du Quoin State fair.

She calls it disappointing to look at declining attendance and see smaller crowds this year.

"There wasn't even wait lines for rides or anything," she said. "It wasn't like it used to be at all."

Fair staff expect tell News 3 they expect official attendance numbers to be in in about a week.

Scientists estimate the probability of a magnitude 6.0 earthquake along the New Madrid Fault in the next 50 years at 28-46 percent.
