Harrisburg fire station collects bug spray for Harvey victims

SALINE CO. -- The Harrisburg Fire Department is leading a drive in southern Illinois to collect bug spray to send to flood-recovery areas in Texas caused by Hurricane Harvey.

"We're just trying to do our part," said Beth Monfort, the Harrisburg Fire and Police Commissioner of Public Safety.

Harrisburg firefighters said they remember the deadly tornado that tore through the city in 2012, and the destruction it left.

"Until you run into some devastation like we did with the tornado back on that leap day, people don't realize just how much that does affect you," said Harrisburg Fire Chief John Gunning. "And what help that you did receive, how much you appreciate that."

Harrisburg officials said people in and around Houston have a desperate need for bug spray. The station already collected dozens of cans, hoping to ship several boxes down.

"They're getting water and things like that, from fire house to fire house, what can they have and they needed some type of bug repellent," said Gunning. "They said they were getting inundated with bugs and mosquitoes."

Organizers said as soon as one box is full, they're going to ship it down to Texas. They said the insect repellent will go to three different towns, where first responders will help distribute the spray, and help as many people as possible.

"It doesn't matter if you're black or white, rich or poor, Muslim or Christian, republican or democrat, we're Americans and that's what we're all about from Texas to New York to small town U.S.A.," said Monfort.

Below is a list of the addresses for the Texas fire stations collecting insect repellent to help Harvey victims.

Fire Department: 211 West Market St. Rockport, TX 78382

Fire Department: 12393 2nd St. Hamshire, TX 77622

Fire Department: 400 Walnut St. Beaumont, TX 77701

Organizers said Port Arthur Distribution Center (address: 200 Houston Avenue Port Arthur, TX 77640) and Port Aransas Community Center (address: 408 Alister St. Port Aransas, TX 78373) are collecting all sorts of items to help victims.
