Golf outing raises money for the kids of fallen soldiers

CARTERVILLE -- A fundraiser at the Crab Orchard Golf Course helped children of fallen veterans.

The Folds Of Honor Charity Classic is in its sixth year and helps the foundation of the same name, one that has benefited the community since 2007.

126 golfers donated money to help the foundation pay for scholarships and other assistance to families of those who gave their lives serving their country.

Organizer Sarah Haas said the idea for the golf outing came six years ago from one of the foundation's members, Maj. Dan Rooney, a former F-16 pilot and PGA golfer.

"(He) came to us and said 'I want to do something for people who are bigger than me,'" Haas said. "He wanted to go ahead and do something to help the world, to help our country and to help those who have helped us."

The Folds of Honor Foundation has funded nearly 16,000 scholarships over the past decade.
