Mt. Vernon Police get award for battling distracted driving

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSON CO. -- The Mt. Vernon Police Department gets statewide recognition for its work battling distracted driving.

The agency recently received the "Excellence Award" from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Officers got honored for several different approaches to curbing distracted drivers.

"Distracted driving is a huge risk to the motoring public. People aren't paying attention. They don't see the motorcyclist, they don't see other vehicles or they just run off the road because they become distracted by electronic device in the vehicle," said Mt. Vernon Assistant Police Chief Trent Page.

Only 10 agencies across Illinois, including Mt. Vernon, got the special honor.
