Mt. Vernon kicks off eclipse activities

Posted: Updated:

MT. VERNON -- Mt.Vernon kicked off its eclipse festivities Thursday at the Totality Fest.

Grace McDowell, marketing executive at Mt. Vernon Tourism, has been proud to call Mt. Vernon her home.

"Being born and raised in Mt. Vernon, I was just very blessed to be able to get a job right out of college where I can promote the city I grew up in," said McDowell.

Some of those activities include a sidewalk sale, family movie night, solar eclipse lecture and star gazing, all reminding folks to keep safety in mind for the big day. And if you're still looking for glasses in Mt. Vernon, McDowell knows where you can find them.

"House Harley-Davidson will be getting in another shipment tomorrow so that is one place in Mt. Vernon that you'll be able to find them, and then again at the happening Cedarhurst event Friday night. Anyone who comes to that gets a free pair of glasses as well," she said.

The Mt. Vernon-native hopes to make a lasting impression on her community.

"All of these events of course are geared toward both visitors and residents alike. We want things to do for people staying here, we also want the community to get out and participate in these events as well," McDowell said.

She called the events a preview of what's to come in 2024, the next time the eclipse will be in town.
