Mediacom introduces 1 GB internet

CARBONDALE -- Mediacom announced a technology milestone: to bring gigabit internet access to 31 southern Illinois communities.

Phyllis Peters with Mediacom says the average American household has around 12 devices connected to the internet at once. But so often in southern Illinois, since we haven't had access to one gig internet speeds, we've seen a lot of buffering.

"Somebody may be downstairs gaming, other people are streaming video and nobody is buffering and nobody is slowing down because there is such a great compacity coming through," said Peters.

Right now to download a two hour movie at standard DSL speeds it may take more than an hour. But with one gig internet, you can download the same movie in less than a minute.

"This is 40 times faster than what the federal government defines as broadband, and its more than 10 times faster if you're using 100 meg internet," said Peters.

And with those faster speeds, the company raised there data cap to 6 terabits a month with that plan. But it'll cost you nearly $100 a month.

"This is a very innovative system that uses our existing network and sort of puts it on steroids," said Peters.

If you have questions about the service, Mediacom will hold another technology presentation with a speed test demo at the Marion City Hall Thursday August 9th at 11 a.m.
