Local company preps for eclipse goers to "do their business"

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Steve Hess does a job no one wants to do, but without his services southern Illinois events would probably hit the fan.

He owns Hess Septic and Portable Toilet Services, where he rents out portable toilets to southern Illinois businesses and individuals for events, projects, properties and more.

His usual demand keeps him busy enough.

“Probably ranges from 25 to 50 new ones per month during the summer months. In the winter is slows tremendously,” he said.

But with over a hundred thousand people expected to flock to the area for the eclipse in two weeks, they'll need a convenient place to "go" when nature calls.

“I can’t even explain it. People have gone crazy over it of course, good for me. But, yeah, we’re highly involved in it,” Hess said.

For Walker's Bluff alone, Hess will provide nearly 300 portable toilets. For Carbondale Tourism and main Street, it'll be almost 200. The high demand is causing him to put in work he's never had to before.

“I’ve started stopping people as they would call me. I told them no more and I keep getting calls so I have called outsiders in the St. Louis area. They’re going to start this weekend hauling me toilets down here,” Hess said.

After 15 years of serving southern Illinois and all its toilet needs, he's happy people count on him for a dire necessity for massive crowds.

“Last week I probably did over 85 hours I’d say,” he said.

That work will continue into these next two weeks with a crew bigger than normal to prepare for those coming from all over, and their restroom needs wherever nature decides to call during the festivities.

Hess also offers septic tank cleaning services and grease trap repair, maintenance and cleaning.
