Woman opens store to offset athletic fees

Posted: Updated:

HERRIN -- While most parents need to pick up supplies ahead of the first day of school, some must also take on athletic fees so their kids can play sports.

Trudy Thompson, owner of Southern Illinois Sports Resale, said she knows first hand how costly it can be for kids to play sports.

"I raised two children myself as a single mom and they were active in sports," said Thompson.

Though she's not a single mother anymore, she wants to help other families that may struggle paying for their kids play.

"I had to think hard about what I felt like Southern Illinois really needed," she said.

Thompson told News 3 over 90 percent of her store is consignment, including new or slightly used items from basketball, soccer, dance, baseball, football, golf and even karate.

She hopes the store will help parents of student athletes save money. That's because schools across the state participate in the "pay to play" program.

Herrin Superintendent Dr. Terry Ryker told News 3 his district will take part this year, joining other schools in Williamson Co.

"We had to look at the amount of money we had and what we needed to educate our students," said Dr. Ryker.

He said families will pay $50 per sport per student, with a $100 cap for multiple sports. There will be a family cap of $150. Students on free lunch will not have to pay, and students with reduced lunch will pay half.

"The citizens of Herrin, they pay property taxes like everybody else and it's hard earned money and I understand that, but we have to do what's best for our school district," he added.

Dr. Ryker said the money will go toward supporting the education in order to balance the impact of the budget, and SIU graduate Thompson hopes to help families offset some of those costs.

"I wanted to help anyone and everyone that we possibly could," Thompson said.

The store opened in April and Thompson said she needs more football gear over any other sport right now. You can visit their Facebook page "Southern Illinois Sports Resale" for more information.
