Suspects charged with attempted murder in Hardin County

HARDIN CO. -- A fire late Monday night turned into a manhunt for two men now charged with attempted murder.

Hardin County deputies caught and arrested 24-year-old Joshua Mohring and 46-year-old Shawn Walton.

Both face charges of attempted murder and aggravated arson.

Witnesses tell News 3 the victim was stabbed and burned when they called 911 late Monday night.

Hardin County States Attorney Daniel Cockrum has identified the victim as Andrew Nicklaus.

Witnesses also tell News 3 Nicklaus specifically mentioned Mohring and Walton stabbing him and then setting him on fire.

"Cops, red and blue, you know, they come down our road and turn in here, which is very rare," explained Hardin County resident Chrystal Barnard.

Barnard says she woke up hearing the sound of a fire flight helicopter flying overhead Monday night. It was coming for Nicklaus, who witnesses say was Mohring's grandfather.

"I was just dumbfounded, because who in the world would think that someone's grandson would do this to them, you know. That's a really laid back community down there," added Barnard.

Barnard says if it wasn't for quick reaction by members of that laid back camping community, Mohring and Walton would be looking at murder charges.

"A lot of times during the week, there's not a lot of people down there. It's mostly a weekend place, so if they hadn't been there, that man probably wouldn't have made it," added Barnard.
