Mt. Vernon farmer's market promises local produce at low costs

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- A monthly farmer's market in Mt. Vernon is helping families get ready for the upcoming start of the school year with an open air farmer's market.

Providing families with local produce at a reasonable price is something organizer Courtney Durham said is very important.

"It's local produce, so it's just a great way to come out and easily have access to all the great local produce that we have in the area," she said.

Stands filled with produce sold bulk fresh fruits and vegetables for as low as a dollar.

Vendor Lance Cusumano with local wholesale company Cusumano and Sons said it's about giving people options.

"We got good prices with good quality and we just decided, you know, this is a weekend to do it and help everyone out," he said.

With the back to school season in full swing, budgets are stretched thin and many families may have to make the choice between buying fresh fruits and vegetables or school supplies.

That's something vendors want to prevent by keeping prices low and making the market easily accessible.

"Everybody's budgets are tight here," Cusumano said. "Buying school supplies, new school clothes and stuff like that, so we're just offering the community a healthy alternative at a reasonable price to help everyone out."

The Mt. Vernon Market Days is held the first Friday and Saturday of every month, keeping options open for everyone.
