Volunteers paint a West Frankfort children's shelter

WEST FRANKFORT -- Dozens of people spent their Saturday decorating a children's shelter in West Frankfort to make it a more welcoming place.

A group of volunteers painted walls of the Night's Shield Children's Center, which houses about 25 abused and neglected children, in an effort to bring a little bit of brightness into the lives of its residents...

Organizers said they hope paintings and bright colors will help take their minds off of what's going on in the outside world.

"They have so much on their plate already and they have so much on their mind already," Executive Director Lindsey Bullman said, "and then to be able to walk through the hallways of where they're living at and to be able to absorb their minds and thoughts into what's going on on the walls rather than what's going on inside or outside in their family life, then it's something positive they can think about."

Several businesses from around the area donated supplies to the project.
